An Internet
Exchange (IX) acts as a junction
between multiple points of Internet presence. Here, peers are
able to directly connect to each other to exchange local
Internet traffic. Typically the IX owns and operates the
switching platforms used to interconnect the various
users/scribers.
The IX is not
a single connection point, but rather many. Once you have
connected via a switch, you will have the ability to peer with
any number of peers over a number of routing protocol.
Many times the
IX and other Internet traffic exchange points (i.e.: MAEs,
NAPs, and the CIX) are not connected to each other via
dedicated connection(s). If an ISP needs to have dedicated
connections to multiple exchange points (i.e.: other
Exchanges, NAPs, MAEs, etc.), then the ISPs may need to build
out their own backbone network. If we are missing echange
points please let us know webmaster@colosource.com. Additonal
resouces can be found at
