What You Should Know about Colocation Services
If you feel that your business could benefit from having an IT department of its own but it simply isn’t in the budget, then colocation is a great alternative to consider. It brings many of the same benefits as housing your own server, but it is much less expensive to get started.
Things to Keep in Mind
It is understandable that you want to save money when it comes to running your business, and this is also true when it comes to finding cheap colocation services. However, you should keep in mind that many of these companies will ask you to sign a lease and that this is legally binding. You should examine the lease requirements carefully and review the services that the colocation companies offer so that you’ll be able to tell whether or not you are getting your money’s worth from any given company.
Where Corners are Sometimes Cut
Many colocation companies claim that they provide managed colocation, meaning that they will not only house your server, but that they will also help you maintain it. Each company has its own definition of managed colocation, however, so you will need to carefully examine what is included. In some cases, a company may only provide you with the initial setup of your server. At the same time, another company may be offering complete management services which include virus protection, OS updates, hardware replacements and more. Compare what is offered with the cost being presented to determine what is right for you.
DNS Hosting and IP Addresses
In most cases, colocation companies will host a set number of DNS servers and provide you with a limited number of IP addresses based upon your monthly fee. When it comes to DNS hosting, you’ll want to ensure that there is space for each domain name you want to run on your server. Otherwise, you’ll be charged an additional monthly fee. Another thing to consider is that most companies do not use more than one IP address, but there are some situations in which additional IPs can be beneficial. Review this as well and make sure that your chosen company can meet your needs at a price you can afford.
The most important thing to remember is that each company that provides colocation services is different. Plans are created and priced differently, and while this can be a bit tricky initially, you can certainly make it work to your advantage.
